Urge the SEC to investigate and hold Facebook accountable

Over the past several years, multiple anonymous whistleblowers have come forward and exposed a shocking pattern of criminal activity on Facebook. The website is a bizarre bazaar for a wide range of horrors, including illegal wildlife trafficking, the sales of looted antiquities, and illegal opioid sales.

There is also extensive networking and promotion of terrorism on Facebook, with Facebook even “auto-generating” its own terror and hate content using materials provided by individuals on its website.

In a recent whistleblower filing, new research showed that despite Facebook's multiple assurances over the past year that the company was committed to removing hate content, it has continued to assist white supremacy groups through its algorithms and auto-generation of pages - pages that white supremacists can use for recruiting new members and supporters.

Facebook’s many assurances about its prompt removal of terror and hate propaganda and other criminal activity are highly misleading. As a publicly traded company, Facebook has an obligation to inform its shareholders of these risk and provide a true accounting of its actions to stop the problem. It has not done so. It’s time for the Securities and Exchange Commission to take action.

So, please, write to your representatives and the SEC commissioners today. The Securities and Exchange Commission needs to investigate and hold Facebook accountable for its deceptive practices.

Facebook’s many assurances about its prompt removal of terror and hate propaganda and other criminal activity are highly misleading. As a publicly traded company, Facebook has an obligation to inform its shareholders of these risk and provide a true accounting of its actions to stop the problem. It has not done so. Dear Senator, I am writing to urge you to look into multiple reports of Facebook’s false assurances about halting criminal action on its network and to ask the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which has directly received anonymous whistleblower tips about these criminal activities, to investigate and sanction Facebook. I am deeply concerned that Facebook has been facilitating and generating terror and hate content on its website, along with facilitating illegal wildlife trafficking and the sale of stolen antiquities. In January of 2019, the National Whistleblower Center (NWC) originally submitted a whistleblower filing on the issue of terror and hate content on Facebook. Despite multiple hearings this past spring and summer before Congress on the proliferation of this content, the issue has continued. As NWC’s recent supplementary filing shows, Facebook was not engaged in meaningful efforts to remove content from hate and terrorist groups over this time period, but in fact was assisting them with such efforts through its algorithms and auto-generation of web pages, enabling the groups' networking and recruiting. More than two years after Facebook hosted an event page for the “Unite the Right” white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, its assistance to white supremacist groups continues unabated. Many of the white supremacist pages identified were auto-created by Facebook itself. Facebook’s many assurances about its prompt removal of terror and hate content are highly misleading. As a publicly traded company, Facebook has an obligation to inform its shareholders of these risk and provide a true accounting of its actions to stop the problem. It still has not done so. I ask that you encourage the SEC to pursue this matter, as the agency has a mandate to investigate and sanction Facebook. Subject: Urgent Investigation of Facebook Requested Regarding Criminal Activities on its Website

Dear Commissioner, I am writing to urge you to investigate the anonymous whistleblower tips filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) concerning the pattern of criminal activity on Facebook. These activities include illegal wildlife trafficking, illicit sales of stolen antiquities, sales of illegal opioids, and the proliferation and generation of terror and hate content, including white supremacist content. Facebook is aware of these widespread issues on its website but has not taken meaningful steps to stop it. Instead, the company has repeatedly assured the public and its shareholders that it is removing much of this content. However, the whistleblowers who have brought these allegations have shown that this is not true. On June 3rd, 2020 the National Whistleblower Center assisted an anonymous whistleblower file a supplement to its 2019 petition to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission calling for sanctions against Facebook for its deception of shareholders and the public. The 2019 whistleblower petition highlighted how, contrary to its public statements, Facebook was not engaged in meaningful efforts to remove content from hate and terrorist groups, but in fact was assisting them with such efforts through its algorithms and auto-generation of web pages for such groups, effectively assisting them with networking and recruiting. This recent supplementary filing features new research by the Tech Transparency Project (TTP), an initiative of the nonprofit Campaign for Accountability (CfA). The research shows that despite Facebook’s assurances since the filing of the 2019 whistleblower petition, and more than two years after Facebook hosted an event page for the “Unite the Right” white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, its assistance to white supremacist groups continues unabated. Many of the white supremacist pages identified in TTP research were created by Facebook itself. Facebook’s many assurances about its prompt removal of terror and hate content are highly misleading. Facebook’s failure to acknowledge its auto-generation of terror and hate content, and its profiting from illegal activity, is also highly deceptive. As a publicly traded company, Facebook has an obligation to inform its shareholders of this risks and provide a true accounting of its actions to stop the problem. It has not done so. As a result, the SEC should investigate and sanction Facebook.
