Urge Congress to protect coronavirus whistleblowers

With a massive surge of federal funding going towards COVID-19 relief, the likelihood of fraud is at an all-time high.

Providing protected avenues for whistleblowers to safely report wrongdoing regarding the misuse of funds is a necessary accountability tool to ensure federal spending reaches those who need relief most.

That’s why a group of Congressmembers introduced the first Covid-19 whistleblower protection bill on June 15^th: the Covid-19 Whistleblower Protection Act. The Act is designed to protect whistleblowers for raising concerns about the gross mismanagement, waste, or abuse of COVID-19-related funds from retaliation.

As opportunities for fraud increase with each new spending bill, it’s critical to incentivize whistleblower reports and provide accountability in the spending of federal coronavirus funds.

Dear Senator, I am writing to urge you to pass the Covid-19 Whistleblower Protection Act, introduced by Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Representatives Jackie Speier (D-CA) and Jamie Raskin (D-MD) on June 15th. The Act is being integrated into the larger Coronavirus Oversight and Recovery Ethics (CORE) Act and aims to incentivize whistleblower reports and provide accountability in the spending of federal coronavirus funds. Our long experience with national emergencies teaches us that some will attempt to profit from others’ misfortune and divert large sums away from the coronavirus response. At a time of national crisis, with millions of lives and livelihoods at stake, it’s essential that taxpayer dollars go to public health and other authorized purposes, and not waste, fraud and abuse. Whistleblowers are one of the most effective means of preventing waste, fraud, and abuse. However, the biggest barrier to whistleblowing is the long history of retaliation. For company insiders, the risk of losing one’s livelihood as a result of disclosing wrongdoing by top executives is substantial. Encouraging them to step forward requires protected avenues to safely report wrongdoing and safeguards against retaliation – avenues that the Covid-19 Whistleblower Protection Act provides. As the coronavirus crisis continues, the brave whistleblowers who come forward need full protection under law. I urge you to pass this legislation, which will be a crucial accountability tool to ensure federal spending reaches those who need relief most.
