As the United States faces the prospect of another severe economic collapse following the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, corporate whistleblowers are needed more than ever. The rapid pace and volume of federal spending has created new opportunities for misconduct, some of which have already been seized by certain corporate actors.
Whistleblowers are already playing an essential role in exposing this misconduct, but stronger policy is needed now. And the American public agrees: a new survey conducted by Marist Poll shows that Americans of all political stripes believe Congress should strengthen whistleblower laws to address corporate fraud.
Fortunately, there is still time in the current Congressional session to strengthen the Dodd-Frank Act, the law that protects and rewards whistleblowers who expose and help prosecute securities and commodities fraud.
Currently pending in the Senate is the Whistleblower Programs Improvement Act, a critical bill which will clarify the scope of whistleblower protections and overturn a disastrous 2018 court decision. If we want to keep corporations accountable in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis, this legislation must pass.
We’re nearing the final stretch of this Congressional session, and every second counts. So please, take action today: ask your senators to co-sponsor and vote for this essential whistleblower bill.
