On March 27th, the CARES Act became law. This sweeping piece of legislation allocated $2 trillion in relief for private businesses, public health, and individuals in response to the escalating coronavirus pandemic.
The CARES Act also created a position for a Special Inspector General for Pandemic Recovery (SIGPR). The SIGPR will be responsible for conducting investigations and auditing the financial assistance programs for businesses authorized under the Act.
However, there’s one key weakness in this new position: the SIGPR doesn’t have the authority for expediting hiring and contracting that is so crucial in setting up a government office quickly.
If we want this special inspector general to succeed in keeping coronavirus spending accountable, they need this authority – and they need it now. That’s why the Senate has introduced a new bill designed to give the SIGPR these powers.
So, please, write to your Senators today. Urge them to lend their support to this legislation. The success of the CARES Act is counting on it.
