Subject: Pass the AI Whistleblower Protection Act into Law

Message:

Dear Senator, The discrepancies between AI companies' public and private stances on their own products, and the threats posed by unregulated AI development, are becoming increasingly obvious. In order to ensure information on these dangers reaches the government and the public, Congress must act to pass the AI Whistleblower Protection Act as soon as possible. As social media companies emerged as major players in the media consumption and communication landscape, Congress did not take action to implement an oversight structure that would protect the public interest and whistleblowers in the industry. In the subsequent years, the industry has grown unfettered by meaningful regulation. Social media companies have massive financial backing and lobbying power in Washington, making them extremely difficult to regulate. We cannot make the same mistake with Artificial Intelligence whistleblowers. The burgeoning sector holds unmatched implications for Americans' privacy and data security, including members of our district. On May 15th, Senator Grassley introduced the AI Whistleblower Protection Act, which would safeguard AI employees who speak out against wrongdoing and abuse. The Act grants AI employees anti-retaliation protections and outlines clear reporting guidelines to the Department of Labor for disclosing AI security vulnerabilities and other AI violations. Under the act, AI whistleblowers are permitted access to jury trials to pursue their cases and are entitled to relief including reinstatement, double back-pay, compensatory damages, and other remedies. As AI companies rush to develop the next big product or groundbreaking technology, financial gain is pursued over the safety of products unleashed on the public, endangering the rights of Americans. We have already done a severe injustice to AI Whistleblowers who have spoken out against abuse of power and opaque business practices. Without diligent regulation of the industry, Americans are relying on employees in the sector to speak out against wrongdoing and reveal misconduct. We must offer them the protection they need to do the right thing. I urge you to protect AI Whistleblowers and ensure the integrity of this burgeoning sector by passing the AI Whistleblower Protection Act into law. I am not alone in my support for whistleblowers. A Marist poll from 2020 shows that 86% of voters support whistleblower protections, a belief that holds constant across party lines and voter demographics. Additionally, 44% of voters reported they were more likely to vote for a Congressional candidate who supported strengthening whistleblower laws.
